Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette Review

Hello, Beautiful Souls!

In celebration of the launch of Urban Decay’s newest edition in the super popular Naked collection, I decided to post my review a day early!

Last week, I got an email from Sephora telling me that Beauty Insiders had early access to purchase the Naked Heat palette. Of course, I ordered it immediately! I’ve been following Urban Decay’s teasers of the palette since the beginning of June. Copper and berry tones have been popular in makeup for a while now, so I was very excited to see Urban Decay release something to follow the trends. I will be reviewing this palette on the packaging and formula.

The Packaging

Like always, Urban Decay comes in with some beautiful packaging! However, this palette’s packaging is a little different than other palettes in the Naked collection. This palette has the Naked Heat sleeve over the top show the shades inside, and the box the palette rests in shows an image of matches being burned. The palette itself is super shiny, and has an ombré type effect where it get’s darker on the right side. Its a little thicker than other palettes in the collection, but its still beautiful!

Packaging Score: 5/5 Emoji Lipsticks makeup-storemakeup-storemakeup-storemakeup-storemakeup-store

The Formula

(Enjoy my messy swatches. Three layers of shadow with a shadow brush was used.)

The formula to me is a little different from the formulas in the past Naked palettes. There is little to no kick up from the shadows, which helps keep the shadow packed on the brush. The thing I didn’t like about the formula is the colors don’t seem as pigmented as previous palettes in the Naked collection. I had to use more and work harder to get the color payoff I was wanting, especially with the middle tones.

Formula Score: 4/5 Emoji Lipsticks makeup-storemakeup-storemakeup-storemakeup-store

Overall I think this palette is a great addition to the Naked collection. I am happy Urban Decay is still adding new items to this collection, and I am excited to see what else they will come up with in the future!

I recommend this palette to anyone who is a fan of Urban Decay’s Naked collection, or a fan of copper shades!

Thank you all for reading! Until next time.

We Need To Talk.

Hello, Beautiful Souls! We need to talk….

Talk? What do you mean talk!?

So, if any of you are actually still out there, we need to talk about my absence. Particularly the reason for my absence.

Well, technically I need to write about my absence, and you need to read it…or not. Either way is totally fine. Here we go.

I started my blog as a dedication to all things beauty, style, and makeup. These things have always been a passion of mine, a means of self expression, and all that jazz. My last post was in September of 2016, it is now June of 2017. Within that time, I have been experiencing the lowest of lows, a lot of lethargy, and finally some normalcy. I will save you most of the details of my complete breakdown, and finally seeking out therapy, but that’s what I did, I sought out therapy.

I was diagnosed with Major Depression in September of 2016, and it was…well, depressing. I hadn’t been feeling “normal” for years before I finally reached out to someone, but between working a demanding retail position and college, it all came to a head in September of last year, and I found it hard to do anything, especially write a blog about beauty when I did not feel beautiful, or deserving of life.

I’ve been thinking about writing this post for some time now, and I’m still not sure what to say. There is a part of me that wants to erase all of this, and just put the past in the past, and start posting beauty things again like nothing ever happened, but the other part of me is pushing myself to write about this. I suffered in silence for a long time. I didn’t talk to anyone. I guess I just want whoever stumbles upon this to know there is nothing wrong with asking for help, or searching for it. I hate the stigma around mental health problems, and depression. When I started therapy, I was so afraid to tell anyone about it because I did not want to be treated in a certain way, or looked at differently. I was afraid people would see me as weak, or fake, or crazy. But I am none of those things, and neither are you, and I can truly say that the grass is greener on the other side of treatment. In my 24 years, I haven’t felt this in control, or content as I do at this current moment.

I am happy.

I’m not saying that I am completely cured, and will never experience the dark stuff again, but I am better equipped to handle it when it comes.

Just please remember there is nothing wrong with asking for help if you are experiencing any type of mental health problem. Please ask for help. There is no reason to suffer in silence. I can’t believe I did for so long.

If you ever need an unbiased stranger to talk things out with, I recommend the website 7 cups of tea. It definitely shouldn’t be used in place of a professional, but I found it really useful between sessions with my therapist or if I ever had a really bad day I needed to vent about.

Anyway, there it is. That’s it.

I hope to start regularly posting beauty things again next week, so be looking out for that!

As always, thank you for reading. Until next time!

Saving the World, One Eyebrow at a Time

Hello, Beautiful Souls! I’m baaaaaackk.

For this post, I’m going to do something a little different, and talk about eyebrows! Eyebrows are extremely important to your face and overall makeup look. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the eyebrows are the curtains. But how do you go about achieving the perfect brow? Well, I can’t help you there, but I can provide a few pointers to get them pretty close!

When plucking my eyebrows, I always use a three point rule. Basically, your eyebrows should start where your tear duct is, and end at a slight angle from the outer corner of your eye. They should also start to arch where your pupil is when you are looking straight forward. This three point rule helps me to create symmetry between my brows.

As you can see, my natural eyebrows do not meet all of these standards. Mostly because I shave the tails off of my eyebrows because they grow so sparse in the first place, it isn’t necessary to keep those hairs in place. PLEASE DO NOT shave the tails of your brows off because I do. I have made my commitment to fill them in everyday. Only proceed with shaving them if you also would like that burden.

Now that I have shown how I pluck my brows, I’m going to explain my process with filling them in.

My Brow Routine

Tools Needed: Your brow pencil of choice, a clear brow gel, and sharp tweezers to pluck stray hairs as needed.

As a general rule, if your hair is dark you should use a color that is two shades lighter than your hair color, and if your hair is light, you should use a color that is two shades darker than your hair color. My hair is currently black, so I use a dark brown color.

First Step: Use a spooley brush or eyebrow brush to flatten the hairs, and ensure that they are all laying the same direction.

Second Step: After brushing the eyebrows, start to define your brows with your eyebrow product, starting by outlining the shape of the brows you would like. Then, go back in with your product making short strokes in the direction your eyebrow hairs are laying.

Third Step: After applying your product, brush over them with your spooley brush again to disperse the product throughout your brows.

Fourth Step: Apply a layer of clear brow gel over your eyebrows to ensure your hairs stay in place, and to give your overall look a clean and polished appearance.

And, viola! You have beautifully defined brows that are ready to take on the world!

To take your brows to the next level of #fleek, finish off by concealing the area around your brows (be sure to blend well!), and applying a shimmering neutral color to your brow bone for that extra pop!

August ’16 Ipsy Product Review

Hello, Beautiful Souls!

I can’t believe August is almost over! Another month in 2016 has flew right by me. I’m not complaining though, because we are entering the pumpkin and eating season-my favorite season!

In this month’s Ipsy bag I received, Dermelect Lacquer in Unscripted, It Hair Care 12 in 1 Amazing Leave in Treatment, Lord&Berry 20100 maximatte crayon lipstick in Intimacy, Josie Maran Whipped Mud Mask in Vanilla Apricot, and IT Cosmetics
No-Tug Waterproof Mini Gel Eyeliner.

Dermelect Lacquer in Unscripted

I’m so happy I finally received a nail polish color I like! This nail polish is seriously beautiful, when I pulled it out of the box, I immediately painted my toes with it. The formula is little thin, so I had to apply 3 coats, but other than that I loved it! It has a very shiny finish to it, so you can do without top coat if you want to!

IMG_7160 Overall Score: 5/5 Lipstick Emojis makeup-storemakeup-storemakeup-storemakeup-storemakeup-store

It Hair Care 12 in 1 Amazing Leave in Treatment

I’m LIVING for this product. As most of you know, I’ve been complaining about my dead hair for the last few months, and this product is just perfect. It provides moisture to my hair without weighing it down, and it also protects against heat. I also can’t get over how good it smells. This is a new go to product for me! I’m also super happy the sample size is so large.

Lord&Berry Crayon Lipstick in Intimacy

I know I’ve said before I hate lip crayons, but I take it back. This one wins. The formula is super creamy, but still manages to be opaque, and doesn’t smear. The color is gorgeous. What’s not to love? Lord&Berry rules at all things lips. Check them out if you haven’t.

Josie Maran Whipped Mud Mask in Vanilla Apricot

I really love mud masks. They are my favorite skin care. This one has a lovely soft scent to it, and a creamy texture. It left my skin feeling hydrated, but I wasn’t completely wowed by it. I’ve tried so many fantastic masks in my lifetime, it’s hard to impress me.

IT Cosmetics No-Tug Waterproof Mini Gel Eyeliner

I totally slammed IT Cosmetics last month for their liquid eyeliner, but I think they redeemed themselves with this eyeliner. The color is blacker than my soul, just how I like my eyeliner to be. I also swatched it on my hand and gave it the ole’ running water test, and it is still on my hands as we speak. They mean waterproof, 100%.

Guys, Ipsy absolutely killed it this month! I don’t think I have ever been happier with the products I’ve received it one bag. Also, that cute ass mermaid is giving me life! I think its so special that Michelle Phan designed it herself. Michelle is still my queen. d0eb75c60fbcd9569bfe3caf1227a838

#MOTD Mondayish: Pumpkin Spice (Featuring Modern Renaissance)

Hello, beautiful souls!

I apologize for my complete lack of communication last week. I was having internet issues, and organizational issues, and school started last week. I was a mess. So, that is partly why y’all are getting MOTD Monday on Tuesday.

The week before last, I had one of my beautiful readers request a look featuring the ABH Modern Renaissance palette. So, this look is featuring just that. I decided to use more of the orange and brown tones in the palette, because I have seen a lot of other beauty gurus using the red and pink tones. The red and pink tones totally make the palette what it is, but the oranges need love too! And since fall is approaching here in the USA, I decided it would fit the changing season.

These Photos are brought to you by: Messy Hair, Don’t Care.

Jeffree Star Skin Frost Review

Hello, Beautiful Souls!

So, there isn’t going to be a Fun Friday this week. I am suffering from a stye on my left eye that will not go away. Since my eye is pretty swollen, I don’t want anyone to see my face until it’s gone! So, here I am with another product review!

I’ve been wanting to try out Jeffree Star’s highlighters for a long time. Seriously, if one person needed to create a highlighter, it was him.

When his first four colors came out a few months ago, I was just getting into highlighting, and I didn’t want to spend the money on something I knew little about. Now, I am fully invested in highlighting, so I decided to give them a try.

Last weekend he released 4 new shades, and restocked 2 of the old shades. I decided to purchase Peach Goddess, one of the old shades, and Lavender Snow, one of the new shades.

Guys, so many people were on the website trying to buy these, it took 20 minutes for my order to process! That is absolutely insane. Also, Lavender Snow sold out in about 10 minutes, so I’m extremely lucky I got it! I will be reviewing this product based on the formula.

The Formula

Like all of Jeffree Star’s products, these are highly pigmented, and extremely dramatic. The texture of them is buttery smooth, and extremely blendable. I also like that Jeffree Star is coming out with non traditional highlighter shades. I’ve seen so many silver, peach, and gold tones, but he has a blue tone! And not subtle blue, HOT blue. I didn’t know blue could be hot until I saw his Deep Freeze highlighter.

Here is the bad thing though, they are a soft formula, so when you think you are picking up a little with your brush, you are actually picking up a lot! It’s a little annoying, because I’m not trying to look like a disco ball. The formula also comes off a little chunky too. To get a smooth application I had to use a fan brush, THEN a fluffy brush to blend it out. Also, Lavender Snow is a little different in consistency than Peach Goddess. Peach Goddess looks like most highlighters I’ve tried after blending it out. It has a nice shimmer that gives you a beautiful glow. Lavender Snow, on the other hand, has more glitter or something in it. Like, it fucking SPARKLES, instead of glows. I will probably only use it for fun occasions, and not every day.

Overall Score: 3.5/5 We’re cool, honey. white-ok-hand-signwhite-ok-hand-signwhite-ok-hand-sign

They aren’t the best highlighters I’ve tried, but they are nice! I also like that you get such a big pan. Have any of you tried the Skin Frost yet? Let me know what you thought about it.

Thank you all for reading! Until next time!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette Review

Hello, Beautiful Souls!

So, I’ve been holding out on you. I purchased the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette about a month ago, but I haven’t reviewed it yet! I know, I’m terrible. I really wanted to use all of the colors, and test it out thoroughly before I reviewed it. So, here we go! I will be reviewing this palette based on the packaging and the formula.

The Packaging

I really love the simpleness of the packaging. Products with simple packaging are usually trying to let the product speak for itself instead of including a bunch of crazy stuff all over it. The only thing I don’t like is the texture of the palette. It has a weird velour/velvet material covering the palette. I usually wouldn’t care, but because it is an eye shadow palette, I do. If you have any loose powder or any other product on your hands when handling this palette, it gets caked on the velvet, and it is impossible to remove, leaving gross looking stains on your palette cover. I think they could have gone with a better material for the cover.

Overall Score: 4/5 YAAASSS HONEYS yaaassyaaassyaaassyaaass

The Formula

Guys, I’m pretty sure this is my holy grail palette! The texture of these eye shadows are so buttery smooth, it’s unreal! They blend with barely any work, and the colors are so versatile, you can get 100 different looks just from these 14 colors. I’ve been using it non stop since I bought it. I’m hooked! As far as I understand, this palette is going to be a permanent thing for Anastasia Beverly Hills. THANK GOD, because when I use this baby up, I’m buying another one on the spot! I can’t live without this thing now. At $42, it is a little pricey, but totally worth it! I use to think Naked2 was my holy grail, but I was wrong. ALL HAIL MODERN RENAISSANCE!

Overall Score: 5/5 YAAASSS QUEEN YAAASSS yaaassd0eb75c60fbcd9569bfe3caf1227a838yaaassd0eb75c60fbcd9569bfe3caf1227a838yaaass

Smudgy Soliloquies: Liebster Award

Hello, beautiful souls!

Well, I finally got tagged in something, I knew it would happen eventually.

I have been nominated for a Liebster Award. Basically, it’s a way to discover new blogs.

I was nominated by officiallykiana & mayabeautyxo.

So, I’ve seen different sets of rules, so I’m a little confused, but here is the gist of the rules:

1. Tag the blogger who nominated you.

2. Answer the questions you were given.

3. Nominate 10 people whose blog is about beauty or fashion.

4. Make 10 questions for your nominees to answer.

5. Inform the bloggers you chose that you nominated them!

I was also nominated by two people, so I guess I’ll answer both sets of questions. Here we go!

Questions from officiallykiana

1. At what age or time in your life did you start dabbling in makeup or beauty products?

I think I was around five. My mom would always let my sister and I buy lipsticks, or give us those horribly cheap cream makeup palettes. I’ve loved all things makeup and beauty since I was a little girl.

2. What is your current skin care must-haves?

Biore Pore strips, and GLAMGLOW Super Mud Clearing mask. I basically just love seeing the dirt ripped from my pores. If it burns, its working, right?

3. Do you wear makeup as an everyday thing, or just special occasions?

I wear some form of makeup mostly everyday. I have no issues rocking a clear face, though. Makeup is something I consider a hobby, and I think it’s fun to apply, so I only do full face when I feel like it.

4. Is there a beauty guru that inspired you and still effects you today? Please name them!

Michelle Phan! The YouTube OG! Half of the stuff I know about makeup today came from her.

5. Does your makeup obsession or love of it effect your friendship or relationship with people who don’t normally wear makeup? (Sorry, that ones a long one!)

My makeup addiction has only been positive for the people around me. One of my best friends from high school use to never wear makeup until I befriended her. Now, she’s an addict just like me. I’ve also done makeup for countless friend’s proms & now weddings.

6. Is your goal in the future to become a big name in the beauty industry?

No, that’s not important to me. I seriously only do this fun.

7. What are some makeup items that you can’t live without?

The only thing that comes to mind is eyebrow products. I can’t leave the house without filling in my eyebrows.

8. If you had to go without one of these for a week, which would it be… lip products, foundation & concealer, mascara, or your highlight/contour?

Highlight/Contour. I only started contouring a few months ago, so it wouldn’t be very hard.

9. What is your all time favorite beauty brand?

That isn’t a fair question. Probably Urban Decay. Naked 2 was the first professional eye shadow palette I ever purchased.

10. Do you wear false lashes? How often?

I have a love/hate relationship with false lashes. I love them because it is basically the push up bra to makeup. I hate them because they are so uncomfortable!

Questions from mayabeautyxo:

1.Where are you from?

I am from a small little farm town smack dab in the middle of Arkansas, USA.

2.Favorite foundation?

Estée Lauder Double Wear. Hands down.

3.Favorite lip combo?

Lip combo? I’m going to let you guys in on a secret, I rarely use lip liner because I’m a lazy bitch. My favorite lipstick right now is Honey Love by Mac and I’m Nude by Jeffree Star.

4.Favorite store?

For makeup? Sephora. For clothes? Torrid, rue21, and Old Navy.

5. Why do you have a blog?

It’s fun and I like writing.

6.What inspires you?

My inspiration changes everyday, I really couldn’t tell you.

7.Do you have a YouTube channel?

Technically, I do, but I’ve never posted a video.

8.Fav Beauty Guru?

Right now I’ve been watching a lot of grav3yardgirl.

9.Fav drug store brand?

Nyx Cosmetics.

10.Biggest fear?

Oblivion. Haha, book references. I guess suffering for a long period of time, or getting abducted.

11. Is there someone you look up to?

My older sister, Beth. She has a blog too! Hello Beautiful Book Blog!

My Questions:

  1. What are your top three favorite makeup products under $20?
  2. Do you have any strange talents?
  3. What is your all time favorite lipstick?
  4. If you could pick a makeup brand to do a collaboration with, what brand would you choose?
  5. Would you rather give up eyeliner or mascara for the rest of your life?
  6. Would you rather give up washing your face or moisturizing your face for the rest of your life?
  7. Who is your biggest beauty idol?
  8. What is your current skin care routine?
  9. Have you ever tried special fx makeup?
  10. What is your favorite season?

I Nominate:

  1. LoveeeAlma
  2. itsastephthing
  3. Laura’s Little Locket
  4. Just Jess
  5. Your Beauty Journal
  6. Now Kiss & Makeup

And I’m cheating and only tagging 6 because my internet is WAY too slow for this.

Thank you all for reading! Until next time!

Smudgy Soliloquies: An Open Letter

Hello, Beautiful Souls!

This blog is going to be completely different from what I usually do. I usually stick to topics surrounded by beauty and style, but today is going to be a little bit of a rant/societal observation. Something happened to me at work tonight, I just felt I needed to talk about.

As most of you may know, I am a sales leader/assistant manager of a popular furniture and home goods store. I REALLY love my job. I like retail. I like interacting with people, helping people, and I LOVE managing. It is hard work, but so rewarding to me.

Tonight, while I was at work, I decided to thoroughly clean the floors, because a lot of ugly black spots had started to appear everywhere. These black spots are caused from the glue on price stickers that get dropped on the ground or from customers tracking in other sticky things, and they are a BITCH to clean up. Mopping the floor just doesn’t do it.

As I’m on my hands and knees with a bottle of goo gone and a razor blade, scraping up the spots on the floor, I see a female customer and her child making their way past me toward the exit. I tell them to have a wonderful night, like I tell all my customers when they leave my store. After ignoring my goodbye and scoffing at me, the female customer turns to her child and loudly tells her, “And that is exactly why you are going to college!” before exiting my building.

I felt about 2 feet tall after I realized that comment was made toward me. After feeling hurt, then angry, I started to feel sad.

I felt sad because that woman did not think for a second that maybe I was in college. I felt sad because that child is being taught that someone working in a retail position is below them. I felt sad that the women looked down on me for scraping black spots off of the floor, in a shop she probably visits frequently, because I take pride in the appearance of my store. I felt sad because I was technically doing it for her, and other customers just like her. After I went over the reasons why I felt bad for myself, I started to feel bad for her instead.

To me, success isn’t having a 9 to 5 desk job, owning a large house, and a fancy car. To me, being rich doesn’t mean making a 6 figure salary. Success is taking pride in yourself and your work. Success is about working hard toward your goals, whatever they may be. Success is about putting your heart and soul into things that you enjoy, just because you enjoy them. Being rich is having friendship, love, and kindness in your life, not money or things or power. I felt bad for that woman, because she obviously doesn’t understand that. I was always taught to treat the janitor with as much respect as the CEO. Your job position or income status does not limit the amount of respect you receive. Your integrity, pride, work ethic, and kindness should define your worth.

I may be scraping gunk off the floor, but I am rich, I am successful, and I am worthy.

I will leave it at that.
